Torsion of the Wandering Spleen

Abstract

|
|
The wandering spleen is a rare anomaly. Torsion of the spleen is one of the less common surgical conditions. This report documents a typical case of torsion of the wandering spleen with review of radiologic findings and literatures. The
preoperative
diagnosis could be accomplished by ultrasonography. The patients was 14-year-old female, whose complaint was lower abdominal pain. A huge abdominal mass was palpated in the lower abdomen. The sonography revealed a spleen-shaped solid mass in the
lower
abomen and abscence of the splenic echo in its normally identifiable position. As the result of sonography, the wandering spleen was strongly suspected. Emergent operation was performed. The splenic artery was elongated and displaced to the
midabdomen
which arouse from left gastroepiploic artery. The spleen was 17¡¿11¡¿6 cm in size and discolored to dark reddish. The splenic vessels were dilated with twisted splenic vascular pedicle. The splenectomy was performed was performed. The interstital
hemorrhage of spicle. The splenectomy was performed. The interstitial hemorrhage of spleen was reported on the pathologic finding.
